Ways to Pay

The best way to pay your student loan bill is with Direct Debit.

Apply for Direct Debit. Once approved, you may even qualify for an interest rate reduction. Or, compare the benefits of all the ways to pay your student loan bill. Then decide what works best for you.

Direct Debit

Direct Debit sets up an electronic deduction from your checking or savings account on your due date each month. Since your loan payment happens automatically, it's applied effective on your due date, even if your due date falls on a weekend or holiday.

Benefits of Direct Debit

  • Direct Debit is the most convenient way to make your student loan payments—on time, every month.
  • Direct Debit is a free service. You may even qualify for an interest rate reduction while actively making payments on Direct Debit.

How to Get Started

Step 1 Sign in to Account Access.
Step 2 Establish a PIN if you don't already have one OR be sure that you have access to a printer.
Step 3 Input your bank account information. Include any extra amount above the minimum amount due that you wish to pay toward your student loans each month.
Step 4 Electronically sign your application with your PIN OR print, sign/date, and return your application to us for processing.

Important: Continue making payments until you get confirmation that Direct Debit will extract your next payment. You'll need to use another payment method until we're ready to start working directly with your bank to set up your monthly payment extracts. We'll do this as quickly as possible for you, but it may take up to 1 or 2 monthly billing cycles for Direct Debit to begin.

Payment Timeline

A Direct Debit payment credits to your account on the day the payment is due, even if your due date is a weekend or holiday. It generally posts to your account within 2 business days of the due date. We may credit your payment to your account one or more days before you can see it online in Account Access.

Paying Extra: You have the option to target extra payments online or request in writing that we reapply extra payments to specific loans. Paying extra may place your loans into paid ahead status.

  • To ensure we can process your check as efficiently as possible, please review our Helpful Hints for Check Payments.

These payments are effective on the date we receive them, or on the next business day in the case of a weekend or holiday. Pay by Third Party Bill-Pay Services

If you use a bill-pay service or pay through your bank, be sure that they have our correct address so that your payment is sent to the right place.

Also keep the following information in mind:

  • We can't offer any interest rate reduction or incentive for automatic payments set up through a third party. You may want to enroll in Direct Debit, our automatic payment program.
  • If you or your bill-pay service mails us a payment, it will be effective the date we receive it, or on the next business day in the case of a weekend or holiday. If you have questions about whether or not a third party service sent a payment to us, you should contact them for details.
  • Your bill-payer may not include any additional instructions or text when they submit your payment, such as in the "memo" text. If you have specific instructions about how we should apply a payment, you need to contact us directly.
  • If you intend to pay extra each month and want us to apply additional funds to specific loans, mail us your payment application instructions. You can view an example of what you may wish to include with your request by reviewing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's sample letter (DOC) regarding targeting payments.

Payment Timeline

The payment will be effective the date we receive it from your bill-payer service, or on the next business day in the case of a weekend or holiday. These payments typically post to your account within 2 business days of that date. Your payment may credit to your account one or more days before you can see it online in Account Access.

Due dates that fall on a weekend or holiday: You should instruct your bill-payer service to submit your payment at least 1 business day before your due date.

Paying extra: You have the option to target extra payments online or request in writing that we reapply extra payments to specific loans. Paying extra may place your loans into paid ahead status.

Set Up Advance Payments

Through Account Access and by phone you can schedule your payments into the future. You can schedule up to eight payments in a 60 day period. You have the flexibility to set up your payments when you know you'll have funds available—but keep in mind that:

  • Payments cannot be scheduled for Saturdays or Sundays.
  • You cannot schedule payments on a holiday when paying by phone.

The option to set up advance payments may be particularly useful if you want to make multiple payments in a given month, or if you prefer to check in on your loans less frequently.
