Tax FAQ

Will AES mail my 1098-E and 1099-C tax forms?

We do not mail 1098-E Student Loan Interest Statements and/or 1099-C Cancellation of Debt notices to all borrowers.

But don't worry. You can always get your tax information online. Sign in to Account Access to:

  • View the amount of interest paid and print a copy.
  • View the amount of debt cancelled and print a copy.

Your tax information will be available in mid-January.

If I was mailed a 1098-E tax form last year, should I expect one again this year?

Not necessarily. If you have signed up for paperless tax and you paid $600 or more in total interest to Loan Servicing and/or Graduate Services, your 1098-E Student Loan Interest Statement will be available in your online account. If you have not signed up for paperless tax and you paid $600 or more in total interest to Loan Servicing and/or Graduate Services you will receive a 1098-E Student Loan Interest Statement in the U.S. Mail. Most borrowers who paid less than $600 in reportable interest will not receive this form.

What is a 1099-C notice?

A 1099-C Cancellation of Debt notice is the government document that reports if $600 or more of the loan debt for which you were responsible was cancelled. AES is required to report this cancellation to the IRS because the cancellation may be considered "income."

Most borrowers will not need a 1099-C notice if they had less than $600 in student loan debt cancelled.

I am not the borrower, but I make payments on a student loan. Can I claim the interest that I paid on my tax return?

Contact a tax professional or the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or IRS.gov. We cannot advise you on tax matters. AES is required to report only to the primary borrower and to the IRS the amount of interest that was paid in the name of the primary borrower.
